Our movie podcast recommendation of the week? Well, it’s ranking things into order, with plenty of film stuff to feast on.
Top Tens are everywhere. Human beings love ranking things. From the music charts and that one time Ed Sheeran had a record breaking sixteen tracks in the UK Top 20 (nine of which in the Top 10), through to movie charts (can you believe Mad Max: Fury Road was neither a US or UK box office number one?), all the way through to the top ten baby names and the top ten tallest buildings in the world. Hitting number one is a level of personal validation that can’t be beaten, but in order to determine what is number one, you need numbers two through ten. If you need to know the literal top ten of anything, you need The Top 10 of Anything podcast.
While not technically a movie podcast, hosts Pav and Neil often focus on films and actors for episodes in which, as the title suggests, contain their personal top ten of that subject. The idea for The Top 10 of Anything came after four successful years of their podcast about the BBC comedy show This Country. 200 episodes on, they thought they’d finished their podcasting experience, until Pav came up with the idea for a podcast about the top ten of anything. The thought of going from one subject, to ranking any and every subject? Oh, the possibilities!
Pav and Neil host together, with Pav taking on the rest of the general podcasting duties. We’re not suggesting Neil is a slacker, unlike Pav did when we reached out to them. This is a podcast that has a wicked sense of humor, enthusiasm and energy in spades. It’s clear Pav and Neil have a great relationship, with the odd ribbing here and there, but what’s great about The Top 10 of Anything is that there are no right or wrong answers. Everyone will have a different top ten of something, especially with episodes on topics such as parody movies, movie deaths, sitcoms and crisps. That’s chips to the American readers.
Top 10 crisps? Impossible task, and yet Pav, Neil and their weekly special guest(s) manage that subject, and many others, with aplomb. Episodes are hilarious, witty and each top ten almost always never contains what you expect, except for all the charm and whimsy from Neil and Pav that you would expect.
Is there anything they won’t run down a top ten of? Actually no. Even some slightly racier topics have been featured on their Patreon for subscribers. This is a family feature, but let’s just say it’s not the sort of top ten you’d discuss with your parents. No top ten is ever off the table for Pav and Neil though, and because of that, every week you’re guaranteed something in episodes of The Top 10 of Anything that you’ll enjoy listening to.
While we can’t list our top ten favorite podcasts, The Top 10 of Anything just might one day and it deserves to list itself at number one.
