EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon baseball landed the fifth-best recruiting class in 2022 according to Baseball America’s annual evaluation of NCAA Division I baseball classes. The No. 5 ranking matches the highest-ranked class in school history, joining the 2010 class.
Oregon’s class, which is the top-ranked class in the Pac-12 and the only one from the conference in the top 15, features 24 recruits consisting of 16 freshmen, four junior college transfers and four four-year transfers. The rankings are based on the incoming freshmen and junior college transfers and do not include four-year transfers.
“This class is an extremely well-rounded class of high-end talent,” Oregon head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “It’s a large class with balance between high school, junior college and portal players. There are high-end players in each category, experienced players of the big-time national prep events, and players that have proven results from championship-level programs. “
The Ducks class features six players ranked in the Baseball America 500, a list of all draft eligible players for the 2022 MLB Draft. Infielder Carter Garate (195) is the top-ranked incoming Duck in the magazine’s top 500, while infielder Drew Smith (214), infielder Dominic Hellman (304), right-handed pitcher Turner Spoljaric (403), outfielder Tafton Hensley (432) and right-handed pitcher Matthew Grabmann (489) also were among the Baseball America 500.
Seven of the new players were also listed in Perfect Game’s list of the top 500 incoming freshmen for the 2023 season. Hellman (30) topped the Ducks’ contingent, while Grabmann (131), Garate (184), Spoljaric (360), right-handed pitcher Jackson Pace (403), infielder Jackson Jaha (436) and outfielder / left-handed pitcher Grayson Grinsell (441) also were among the group.
Two of Oregon’s incoming players were selected in the 2022 MLB Draft. The Los Angeles Angels selected infielder / catcher Sabin Ceballos, a junior college transfer, in the 14th round. The native of Puerto Rico is the highest drafted junior college player not to sign and the 10th-highest drafted player from the 2022 draft returning for the 2023 college season. The New York Mets selected Jaha in the 15th round.
