Huron Valley students won’t be allowed to take backpacks to class this year – The Oakland Press

When Huron Valley students return to class this fall, they won’t be able to carry backpacks with them during the school day as they have in the past.

According to Superintendent Paul Salah, the new policy starts the first day of class on Sept. 6 and affects 2,700 students, but is not reactionary. It’s something the district has discussed in the past.

“We have been talking about it for a few years and something like this has always been on our radar,” said Salah. “We simply decided to implement it this year.”

Under the new policy, students at Lakeland and Milford high schools can bring backpacks to school, but they will not be allowed to bring them into classrooms.

Salah said the new policy was equally a matter of saving space in classrooms and hallways as well as student safety.
