Texas teachers will continue to suffer financially: Letter to the Editor

Texas teachers will continue to suffer financially

Blake Gumprecht’s column challenging Texas to become more creative to overcome teacher shortages, April 10th, does not address a huge factor in why there is one.

School districts in El Paso have not offered any cost-of-living-adjustments to deal with the crushing inflation problem that teachers are faced with. Meanwhile, New Mexico teachers have been legislating pay raises between 7% to 22%, which acts as an incentive for established El Paso teachers to look just beyond their district for financial relief.

While Texas Governor Greg Abbott funnels state funds to build portions of a border wall that has no funding to finish, Texas teachers will continue to suffer the harsh reality of higher prices for virtually everything.
